Freeware collection
Good applications make computing fun. TechSupportAlert has a nice list of best freeware for Windows. They have other lists too. Another good list is nedwolf’s.
For me, after a fresh install, I need WinSCP, AVG Free, PuTTY, ZipGenius, Free Download Manager, IrfanView, EditPad Lite, and of course Firefox right away.
meebo is excellent
meebo allows you to use instant messaging programs (MSN, Yahoo, Google, etc.) via web interface. Very user friendly. No need to install anything.
It’s not perfect though. I sometimes have problem sending messages.
Fun games
Take a break from work and play quick fun games that can be played inside a web browser: MissionRed (try reflex), OneMoreLevel (try Mouse Speed), and MouseBreaker.
Physics Nobel Prize 2007
2007 Nobel Prize in Physics goes to the giant magnetoresistance discovery in 1988 by Albert Fert (Université Paris-Sud in France) and Peter Grünberg (Forschungszentrum Jülich in Germany). I don’t know much about this GMR thing. Apparently it leads to new hard drive technologies. Neat.
iPod touch
Played with iPod touch in store the other day. It’s pretty nice. I don’t want it as a music player though. Fast wireless web access is what I’m interested in. The large screen photo viewing is also a plus. My current iPod is serving me well though. So someday maybe.
UC Berkeley lectures
UC Berkeley has posted course lectures on iTunes for free download for a while. Now they have put some of their fine lecture videos on YouTube. Great way to learn stuff.
