Did my 3rd race of 2011 this morning. Woke up around 3:10am. Fueled up with ham and peanut butter sandwich at 3:30am. Banana 10 minutes later. Drank a little water.

It rained before my wife and I left the house, but the rain stopped before the race started. I registered and paid 250 Baht for the bib number. Took couple sips of water, but didn’t eat anything else at the booths. To prevent anything funny with the stomach again, I avoided eating in the 2 hour window before the race. Sat around for a while before doing a short jog to warm up.

Good energy at the start line. Spotted some top Thai runners and some fast-looking Kenyans. The starting bell was delayed due to late arrivals of VIPs and a long opening ceremony. As today is Queen’s birthday, it was kind of a big event. So the delay was expected and it wasn’t too bad. We took off at a little after 6:10am.

Due to the rain, there were some puddles on the streets. This caused a bit of a mess. It’s still better than running under a hot sun though.

I kept a pretty steady pace throughout. A fast start (maybe too fast), followed by a slowdown. But I never faded away. I tried tagging along strong runners and made passes when I felt I could. Unlike last race, I didn’t get passed too often.

I finished in 38:18 (self-timed). The course seemed short. My time between 4km and 5km markers was 2:43 min, which is just impossible. Google Maps gave the total distance of around 9.4km.

I had fun today. It went better than my last race. Felt good seeing the clock as I approached the finish. I hit my goal (in spite of the short course).

summary: NCC-TTM minimarathon (เอ็น.ซี.ซี.-รยส. มินิมาราธอน ครั้งที่ 19)9.4km, 38:18 min. shoes: Adidas Adizero Boston.
winners: Ngare Joseph Mwangi (M) from Kenya, 28:24; Ann Mukuhi Njihia (F) from Kenya, 36:18.

It was a good event overall. Even though the jasmine handout line was long and the food wasn’t great, the distance markers and water stations were adequate. The policemen did a good job controlling traffic. Hope they get well compensated for their work.

  3. Good race, Rop. Nothing better than watermelon at the end of a race!
