Don’t let yourself forget how many doctors have died, after furrowing their brows over how many deathbeds.
How many astrologers, after pompous forecasts about others’ ends.
How many philosophers, after endless disquisitions on death and immortality.
How many warriors, after inflicting thousands of casualties themselves.
How many tyrants, after abusing the power of life and death atrociously, as if they were themselves immortal.
In short, know this: Human lives are brief and trivial. Yesterday a blob of semen; tomorrow embalming fluid, ash.
To pass through this brief life as nature demands. To give it up without complaint.
Like an olive that ripens and falls.
Praising its mother, thanking the tree it grew on.
— Marcus Aurelius, Meditations
Start training with resistance bands today. It’s a new kind of challenge.
Weight is down to 72 kg. Still the belly doesn’t seem to get any smaller.
Morning in Chiang Mai. Bought traditional food: spicy sausage (ไส้อั่ว), pork rind, nam phrik noom. Had khao soi for lunch, which was really good and cheap (50 THB). My friend and I then had unplanned blood donation in a mall. She wanted to do it, and I just went along, thinking, what the hell.
I can’t remember the last time I gave blood. I think of it as a small challenge to face. A needle in your arm doesn’t seem pleasant, but it’s just a brief physical discomfort. You can treat it as a stoic practice. The donation isn’t unhealthy in any way. To me it is not altruistic in the sense of a sacrifice. If my blood turns out to save another human’s life, then great. But giving blood is good for my health too, from what I have learned. It allows the body to come up with fresh plasma and blood cells and reduces oxidative iron.
Aside from giving a bit of your time and a temporary drop in energy level, there’s nothing lose. It feels good to do it. I could get used to this.
Challenges make you grow. Embrace the challenges. Those who cower in fear are afraid to fail. Be wise. Understand that failing is part of being alive. It’s the learning process. Your life is filled with events, like a book with stories. In the end, nobody cares if it’s a perfect book.
Those who fail after those with courage to try new things. Those who don’t fail are cowards who never try anything. Winners are those who don’t stop when they fail. They don’t quit because others laugh at them. If you care about what people think you already lose.
To accomplish something big, you must first dare to dream big, and then plan carefully. Be realistic and try sincerely to reach your goal. Use your wisdom to come up with a plan that is actually promising. You can fool other people but you cannot fool yourself. If you fool yourself, your plan will suck and you will never succeed.
Dare to dream. Dare to be different. Dare to fail. Have a life full of failures instead of fears. You learn from failures. Be courageous in doing the right things. Don’t get too down on yourself when things don’t go your way. Be moderate in your feelings. Identify external factors and distance your feeling from it.
Your dream is yours. If you always try to please others, you are weak-willed and your life will be wasted. Each day must serve as a stepping stone for you to get closer to your dream.
The ocean is so big. The sky is enormous. Embrace the vastness of the world and your role as a part of nature and society. Don’t chase meaningless things like fame and money by giving up principles.
During your short life, be a useful person to the community you belong to. Contribute something to the world. Do your best when you choose to do something. Be a genuine person who leads a life of virtues.
To fear death is to submit yourself to ignorance about nature. We are born to live for a short while before we say goodbye. Death is natural and is unavoidable for everyone. Do good while alive.
Good means living wisely, with courage and justice. Be brave to do and say the right things. Be fair to everyone, friend or foe. With understanding of nature comes moderation. Never get too high or too low. Happiness or sadness. Success it failure. It is all just an interpretation. It is not real.
Improve the world by bettering yourself everyday. Be more wise, fair, brave, and calm under any situation. That’s the goal.
